An Always-On Companion for Isolated Older Adults
Candy Sidner, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)
10/22/2014, 11 am PST, Room 201 Sunnyvale
In this talk I summarize the status of the ongoing AlwaysOn project to develop and evaluate a virtual agent/robot companion for isolated older adults. I will provide a short video of the working system, and discuss several novel scientific issues of the project: embodiment as virtual agent or robot, the interaction paradigm, engagement between agent and user, development of long term relationships between user and agent, and the real-time system architecture. The system architecture is extensible and handles real-time at several time scales. The system supports multiple activities, including discussing the weather, playing cards, telling stories, exercise coaching and video conferencing. I will conclude with a discussion of a month long study involving the AlwaysOn system in the homes of isolated older adults.
