Main area of research
Natural language & AI
Sylvie's research interest is in machine learning, reinforcement learning and natural language processing. Prior to joining Nuance, she completed a research project at McGill's Reasoning and Learning Lab, working on predictive state representation approaches for integrated model learning and planning. She also worked at the National University of Singapore developing efficient algorithms for planning under uncertainty, specifically, in partially observable Markov decision processes. Her PhD thesis was on sign language recognition, focusing on grammatical inflections as they appear in American Sign Language. Prior to doing research in academia, she worked variously as an electronics hardware engineer, firmware developer and test software developer.
